Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Coptis chinensis + ginseng is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herb pair being investigated by Dongzhimen Hospital (Beijing University of Chinese Medicine) for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The combination leverages the synergistic effects of its primary active components: berberine from *Coptis chinensis* and ginsenosides from *Ginseng*. Berberine is known to activate adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which enhances glucose uptake and inhibits gluconeogenesis, while also modulating the gut microbiota. Ginsenosides contribute by improving insulin sensitivity, protecting pancreatic beta-cell function, and exerting anti-inflammatory effects. This combination is typically administered as a decoction or granules and is currently in clinical development to evaluate its efficacy in lowering HbA1c and improving metabolic parameters in diabetic patients.
