Overview
coptis chinensis + scutellaria baicalensis is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal combination therapy being evaluated for the treatment of primary hypertension, particularly in patients presenting with the heart-and-liver fire syndrome. The combination consists of extracts from the rhizome of *Coptis chinensis* (Huang Lian) and the root of *Scutellaria baicalensis* (Huang Qin). Its mechanism of action is hypothesized to involve the modulation of the intestinal–sympathetic nervous system axis, potentially reducing sympathetic overactivity. The primary active constituents include alkaloids such as berberine from *Coptis* and flavonoids such as baicalin from *Scutellaria*, which have demonstrated vasodilatory, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties in various cardiovascular models. The therapy is typically administered as herbal granules.
