Cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center for the treatment of moderate to critical COVID-19 pneumonia and associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). These cells are multipotent stromal cells isolated from healthy, unrelated donor umbilical cord blood and expanded in vitro. The therapeutic rationale for using MSCs in ARDS is based on their potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. Upon intravenous administration, these cells are thought to sequester in the pulmonary microvasculature where they secrete paracrine factors that mitigate the hyperinflammatory 'cytokine storm,' reduce alveolar-capillary membrane permeability, and promote the repair of damaged lung tissue.
