Cord blood-derived natural killer (NK) cells are an adoptive cell therapy product developed by Nanfang Hospital of Southern Medical University for the treatment of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). These cells are isolated from umbilical cord blood and expanded ex vivo to reach therapeutic doses, typically administered at levels of at least 1×10⁹ cells per infusion. As innate immune effectors, these NK cells provide an off-the-shelf therapeutic option that can directly lyse tumor cells through the release of perforin and granzymes and the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines like interferon-gamma. In clinical studies, such as the Phase II CAN trial, these cells are being evaluated in combination with the PD-1 inhibitor camrelizumab and the VEGFR2 inhibitor apatinib to enhance anti-tumor immune responses and overcome the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment in patients with advanced HCC.
