Overview
This combination consists of 1 gram of corn oil and 4 mg of alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E), formulated as a gelatin capsule for oral administration. It was utilized as the placebo control arm in the OFAMI (Omacor Following Acute Myocardial Infarction) study, conducted by Helse Stavanger HF (formerly Central Hospital in Rogaland). The corn oil provides a source of omega-6 fatty acids, while the alpha-tocopherol serves as an antioxidant to protect the polyunsaturated fats from oxidation. The formulation was designed to match the appearance and administration of Omacor (omega-3 acid ethyl esters) to maintain blinding in clinical trials investigating the secondary prevention of cardiac events in post-myocardial infarction patients.
