Cornea limbal stem cells + corneal stromal stem cells is an autologous cell-based therapy under investigation for the treatment of unilateral limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD), particularly cases caused by chemical injury. The therapy involves the co-transplantation of two distinct autologous stem cell populations: limbal stem cells (LSCs), which are epithelial progenitor cells harvested from the patient's healthy contralateral eye to reconstruct the corneal surface, and corneal stromal stem cells (CSSCs), which are stromal progenitor cells capable of differentiating into keratocytes to regenerate the corneal stroma. Developed by the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center at Sun Yat-sen University, the cells are expanded ex vivo under serum-free conditions. The treatment aims to restore corneal transparency and visual function by reconstructing both the epithelial and stromal layers of the damaged cornea.
