Overview

This is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) combination of Cortex Moutan (Mu Dan Pi), the root bark of Paeonia suffruticosa, and medicinal leech (Shuizhi). Cortex Moutan is used for its properties in cooling blood, clearing heat, promoting blood circulation, and resolving blood stasis. It is commonly applied to conditions involving excessive heat in the blood or stagnation such as irregular menstruation, traumatic injuries with bruising or pain from stasis, feverish diseases with bleeding symptoms, and yin deficiency syndromes[1][4]. Medicinal leech contains bioactive compounds such as hirudin that exhibit anticoagulant and antithrombotic effects. Leech extracts are used to improve hemorheology (blood flow), prevent thrombosis-related disorders like stroke or deep vein thrombosis, reduce platelet aggregation, and have anti-inflammatory activities[2]. The combination is typically employed in TCM formulas targeting disorders related to poor circulation or blood stasis.
