Coviccine Trivalent XBB is a recombinant protein vaccine developed by WestVac Biopharma in collaboration with West China Medical Center, Sichuan University. It is designed to protect against SARS-CoV-2 variants, specifically targeting the XBB, BA.5, and Delta lineages. The vaccine utilizes an insect cell (Sf9) expression platform to produce subunit antigens based on the structure of the spike protein's receptor-binding domain (RBD) and heptad repeat (HR) regions. These antigens self-assemble into stable trimeric protein particles and are formulated with a squalene-based oil-in-water emulsion adjuvant to enhance immunogenicity. In June 2023, it received emergency use authorization in China as a booster vaccine for adults, making it the first vaccine approved specifically against XBB descendent lineages.
