COVID-19 convalescent plasma developed by A.O.U. Città della Salute e della Scienza di Torino is a biological therapeutic intervention consisting of plasma collected from patients who have recovered from COVID-19 infection. The active ingredient is plasma containing antibodies (immunoglobulins) against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This biologic therapy was evaluated in the PLACO-COVID trial, a randomized three-arm phase 2 study coordinated by the Azienda Ospedaliera Città della Salute e della Scienza in Turin, Italy. The trial compared standard therapy alone versus standard therapy plus COVID-19 convalescent plasma versus standard therapy plus standard plasma (from donors without SARS-CoV-2 exposure) in hospitalized COVID-19 patients with recent-onset acute respiratory failure. The therapeutic mechanism is passive immunization through the transfer of neutralizing antibodies from recovered patients to actively infected patients to neutralize the SARS-CoV-2 virus and prevent the progression of infection.
