Drug intelligence / Profile preview
COVID-19 convalescent plasma developed by Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS is a passive immunotherapy consisting of plasma collected from patients who have recovered from SARS-CoV-2 infection. The therapy functions by providing immediate, passive immunity through the transfer of high titers of neutralizing antibodies (anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies) that bind to the virus and prevent its entry into host cells. This investigational biologic was specifically evaluated in the LIFESAVER trial (NCT04374526), a Phase 2/3 randomized study. The trial focused on elderly patients (aged 65 and older) with COVID-19 pneumonia and chronic comorbidities, aiming to prevent disease progression to severe pneumonia and reduce viral load through early transfusion of ABO-matched, pathogen-inactivated plasma.
