Overview

COVID-19 convalescent plasma is a biologic therapeutic derived from the blood of individuals who have recovered from a SARS-CoV-2 infection. This passive immunotherapy involves the transfusion of plasma containing high titers of polyclonal neutralizing antibodies that specifically target the SARS-CoV-2 virus, particularly its spike protein. By binding to the virus, these antibodies neutralize its ability to infect host cells and assist the recipient's immune system in clearing the infection. The Houston Methodist Research Institute pioneered the clinical use of this therapy in the United States, conducting the first pilot trials to assess its safety and efficacy in patients with severe or critical COVID-19 disease.
