Overview

COVID-19 convalescent plasma developed by the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg Medical School is a biologic therapy consisting of blood plasma collected from patients who have recovered from COVID-19. The active ingredient is polyclonal antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, including neutralizing antibodies and other antibody components that can recognize and neutralize the virus. This therapy was evaluated in the prospective, open-label, randomized, controlled Phase 2b IPCO trial (Convalescent Plasma in Severe COVID-19) conducted in Germany between January 2021 and May 2022. The study specifically targeted adults with severe COVID-19 and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) requiring mechanical ventilation. The antibodies work through multiple mechanisms, including viral neutralization, antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC), complement activation, and phagocytosis. As an investigational biologic therapy for passive immunization, it does not have a commercial brand name.
