COVID-19 vaccine (Vero cell), inactivated refers to a class of whole-virion inactivated vaccines developed to prevent COVID-19. These vaccines are produced by growing SARS-CoV-2 in Vero cell cultures, followed by chemical inactivation (typically with beta-propiolactone) to render the virus non-infectious while preserving its antigenic structure. The resulting inactivated virus is purified and usually formulated with an aluminum hydroxide adjuvant. Prominent examples include Sinovac's CoronaVac and Sinopharm's BBIBP-CorV (COVILO). By presenting the entire inactivated virus to the immune system, these vaccines elicit a broad immune response against multiple viral proteins, including the spike (S), nucleocapsid (N), envelope (E), and membrane (M) proteins, leading to the production of neutralizing antibodies and activation of T-cell mediated immunity.
