Overview

Anavip is an equine-derived antivenin indicated for the management of adult and pediatric patients with envenomation from North American pit vipers, including rattlesnakes, copperheads, and cottonmouths. The active substance consists of venom-specific F(ab’)2 fragments of immunoglobulin G (IgG) purified from horse serum after immunization with pit viper venom. These antibody fragments bind to and neutralize venom toxins in the body, facilitating their redistribution away from target tissues and elimination. Anavip is administered intravenously as soon as possible after a qualifying snake bite to control local injury, coagulation abnormalities, or systemic signs of envenomation[1][2][4][5]. It can control most symptoms within 4 hours and may prevent further symptoms for up to 8 days[1][3]. Common side effects include itching, rash, nausea, headache, swelling in extremities or face; allergic reactions are possible due to its equine origin[1][5].
