This combination therapy involves the sequential use of cryotherapy followed by the topical application of sinecatechins 15% ointment (Veregen) for the treatment of external genital warts (EGW). Cryotherapy is a physical procedure that uses extreme cold to destroy visible wart tissue through direct cytodestruction. Sinecatechins is a botanical drug product derived from green tea leaves (Camellia sinensis) that contains a proprietary mixture of catechins, primarily epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg). When used sequentially, cryotherapy provides immediate clearance of visible lesions, while sinecatechins acts as a field therapy to treat sub-clinical infection and prevent recurrence. The mechanism of sinecatechins is thought to involve antioxidant, antiviral, and immune-stimulatory properties. This specific regimen was evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT02147353) sponsored by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, which demonstrated superior efficacy compared to cryotherapy alone.
