Overview

Curcumin + icariin is a combination of two naturally occurring bioactive compounds—curcumin (a polyphenol derived from turmeric) and icariin (a flavonoid glycoside extracted from Epimedium species). This combination has been investigated primarily for its potential anticancer properties, particularly in the context of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), where both agents are co-delivered using advanced drug delivery systems such as inhalable micelles. The rationale for combining these agents lies in their complementary mechanisms of action, including inhibition of cancer cell proliferation, induction of apoptosis, antioxidant activity, and modulation of key signaling pathways involved in tumor growth and drug resistance. Curcumin is known to inhibit multiple molecular targets related to inflammation and oncogenesis (such as NF-κB), while icariin exhibits anti-proliferative effects through pathways like PI3K-Akt-mTOR. In preclinical studies using nanomicellar formulations for pulmonary administration, the combination demonstrated enhanced cytotoxicity against lung cancer cells compared to either agent alone[1][3][4]. Further research is ongoing to evaluate its efficacy and safety profile.
