Curcuminoids + alpha-tocopherol is an antioxidant combination therapy investigated by Mahidol University for the treatment of beta-thalassemia and hemoglobin E disease. Curcuminoids, derived from turmeric, act as potent antioxidants and mild iron chelators, while alpha-tocopherol (Vitamin E) serves as a primary lipid-soluble antioxidant. In patients with beta-thalassemia/Hb E, the accumulation of unstable hemoglobin subunits and iron overload leads to significant oxidative stress and damage to red blood cell membranes. This combination therapy aims to alleviate oxidative stress, reduce lipid peroxidation, and potentially improve hematological parameters by neutralizing reactive oxygen species and supporting the endogenous antioxidant defense system. It is often studied as part of a larger antioxidant cocktail including N-acetylcysteine and the iron chelator deferiprone.
