CV2CoV-Beta + CV2CoV-Delta is a bivalent second-generation messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine candidate developed by CureVac in collaboration with GSK. It is designed to provide protection against COVID-19 by targeting the spike proteins of both the SARS-CoV-2 Beta (B.1.351) and Delta (B.1.617.2) variants. The vaccine utilizes CureVac's second-generation mRNA backbone, which incorporates optimized non-coding regions and codon usage to enhance mRNA stability and translation efficiency, resulting in significantly higher protein expression compared to the first-generation CVnCoV platform. By combining mRNA sequences for two distinct variants, the bivalent formulation aims to elicit a broader and more potent neutralizing antibody response, addressing the challenge of viral evolution and variant escape. Preclinical data indicated that this bivalent approach provides superior cross-neutralization against multiple SARS-CoV-2 variants compared to monovalent counterparts.
