Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This combination pharmacotherapy regimen consists of the skeletal muscle relaxant cyclobenzaprine and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It was evaluated in a clinical trial conducted by Beni-Suef University to treat masticatory muscle hyperactivity in patients with bruxism. Cyclobenzaprine is a centrally acting muscle relaxant that is thought to reduce tonic somatic motor activity by influencing both gamma and alpha motor systems, primarily within the brain stem; its effects may be mediated through antagonism of 5-HT2 receptors. NSAIDs provide complementary analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), which are responsible for the synthesis of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins.
