This is a multi-agent chemotherapy regimen composed of five drugs—cyclophosphamide, vincristine, cytarabine, doxorubicin, and prednisone—used primarily in the treatment of hematologic malignancies such as acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and certain types of aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Each component has a distinct mechanism of action: - Cyclophosphamide is an alkylating agent that crosslinks DNA strands, inhibiting DNA replication and leading to cell death. - Vincristine is a vinca alkaloid that inhibits microtubule formation in mitosis. - Cytarabine is an antimetabolite that interferes with DNA synthesis by acting as a cytosine analog. - Doxorubicin is an anthracycline antibiotic that intercalates into DNA and inhibits topoisomerase II. - Prednisone is a synthetic glucocorticoid with anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties; it induces apoptosis in certain cancer cells. This combination targets rapidly dividing malignant cells through multiple mechanisms to maximize efficacy. It may be used during induction or consolidation phases of therapy for ALL or other lymphoid malignancies.
