Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cyclosporine A is a small molecule calcineurin inhibitor formulated in the proprietary MiDROPS (Microemulsion Drug Delivery System) platform for topical ophthalmic delivery. Developed by MiDROPS, this candidate is currently in preclinical development for the treatment of autoimmune uveitis. The mechanism of action involves the inhibition of calcineurin, a calcium-dependent phosphatase, which prevents the dephosphorylation and nuclear translocation of the Nuclear Factor of Activated T-cells (NFAT). This blockade suppresses the transcription of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and other pro-inflammatory cytokines, effectively inhibiting T-cell activation and the subsequent inflammatory cascade associated with uveitis. The MiDROPS platform is designed to enhance the solubility and ocular penetration of hydrophobic drugs like cyclosporine, potentially allowing for more effective delivery to the posterior segments of the eye compared to standard topical formulations.
