Cybelle is a combined oral hormonal medication containing the synthetic progestin and antiandrogen cyproterone acetate (2 mg) and the synthetic estrogen ethinylestradiol (0.035 mg). Developed as a generic alternative to Diane-35, Cybelle is primarily indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe androgen-dependent dermatological conditions in women of reproductive age, such as acne (with or without seborrhea), hirsutism, and androgenetic alopecia, as well as for the management of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Cyproterone acetate acts as a competitive antagonist at the androgen receptor and suppresses gonadotropin secretion, while ethinylestradiol enhances this effect by upregulating sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) levels, thereby reducing circulating free androgens. Additionally, the combination provides reliable oral contraception by inhibiting ovulation and altering cervical mucus.
