Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ara-cell is a liposomal formulation of the pyrimidine analogue cytarabine, specifically developed for sustained-release delivery into the cerebrospinal fluid via intrathecal or intraventricular administration. It was marketed in Europe by CellPharm (a subsidiary of STADA) and is identical in composition to the product known elsewhere as DepoCyt. The formulation utilizes DepoFoam technology, consisting of microscopic, lipid-based particles that encapsulate the drug and release it slowly, maintaining therapeutic levels for up to 14 days. This pharmacokinetic profile is particularly advantageous for treating neoplastic meningitis and leptomeningeal metastases, as it reduces the frequency of invasive injections required compared to standard cytarabine. Ara-cell has been a core component of the MEMMAT (Medulloblastoma Multidisciplinary Aggressive Therapy) protocol led by the Medical University of Vienna for the treatment of recurrent or refractory pediatric brain tumors, including medulloblastoma, ependymoma, and atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumors (ATRT). Although the product was discontinued globally by its manufacturers due to technical production challenges, it remains a significant reference in neuro-oncology for its role in managing leptomeningeal spread of central nervous system malignancies.
