It serves as a donor substrate for sialyltransferases in the enzymatic sialylation of glycans and glycoproteins. This molecule is essential for the biosynthesis of sialoglycoconjugates in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. In humans and other organisms, it is synthesized by the enzyme N-acylneuraminate cytidylyltransferase (CMAS), which catalyzes the activation of NeuNAc to form CMP-NeuNAc—a critical step for cell surface expression of sialic acids. These modifications are important for cell-cell interactions and pathogen recognition[1][2][3].
