Autologous cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells are an investigational adoptive cellular immunotherapy being developed by The First People's Hospital of Changzhou for the treatment of cholangiocarcinoma. CIK cells are generated by expanding a patient's peripheral blood mononuclear cells ex vivo in the presence of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin-2 (IL-2), and anti-CD3 monoclonal antibodies. The resulting cell population is a heterogeneous mix of T lymphocytes, predominantly CD3+CD56+ cells, which possess potent, non-major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-restricted tumoricidal activity. In clinical development, these cells are administered intravenously following radiofrequency ablation (RFA) to target residual tumor cells and prevent recurrence in patients with unresectable cholangiocarcinoma.
