Overview

Cytomegalovirus hyperimmune globulin + ganciclovir is a combination therapy used primarily for the prevention and treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections, especially in immunocompromised patients such as organ or bone marrow transplant recipients. Ganciclovir is a synthetic nucleoside analogue that inhibits viral DNA polymerase, thereby blocking viral DNA synthesis and replication. It requires phosphorylation by viral kinases to become active, making its action relatively selective for infected cells[3][6]. Cytomegalovirus hyperimmune globulin is a preparation of human immunoglobulins with high titers of antibodies against CMV; it provides passive immunity by neutralizing the virus and enhancing immune clearance. The combination aims to provide both direct antiviral activity (ganciclovir) and enhanced immune-mediated protection (hyperimmune globulin), reducing the risk or severity of CMV disease in high-risk populations.
