Cytomegalovirus pp65-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes is an adoptive cell therapy developed by the University of Louisville for the treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections in immunocompromised patients. The therapy involves the infusion of donor-derived T cells that have been specifically activated and expanded to recognize the pp65 tegument protein, a dominant antigen of CMV. This approach aims to restore the recipient's cellular immune response against the virus, particularly in allogeneic stem cell transplant recipients who suffer from persistent or drug-refractory CMV infections. By targeting pp65-expressing cells, these CTLs facilitate the direct lysis of infected cells and help control viral replication without the toxicities associated with systemic antiviral drugs.
