DW-1026 is a fixed-dose combination small molecule developed by Daewon Pharm for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It consists of dapagliflozin, a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, and metformin, a biguanide that reduces hepatic glucose production and improves insulin sensitivity. This combination therapy is designed to provide synergistic glycemic control by targeting multiple physiological pathways involved in glucose homeostasis. Dapagliflozin works by inhibiting glucose reabsorption in the proximal renal tubules, leading to increased urinary glucose excretion, while metformin primarily acts by decreasing hepatic gluconeogenesis and increasing peripheral glucose uptake. DW-1026 was developed as an extended-release (XR) formulation to improve patient compliance and has received regulatory approval in South Korea under the brand name Dapameta XR.
