Drug intelligence / Profile preview
dapagliflozin + metformin immediate release is a fixed-dose combination therapy developed by Alvion Pharmaceuticals for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It combines two antihyperglycemic agents with complementary mechanisms of action: dapagliflozin, a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, and metformin hydrochloride, a biguanide. Dapagliflozin works by inhibiting the SGLT2 protein in the proximal renal tubule, which reduces renal glucose reabsorption and increases urinary glucose excretion. Metformin primarily acts by decreasing hepatic glucose production, decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. This specific formulation is an immediate-release (IR) version developed as a generic alternative to facilitate glycemic control in patients where treatment with both dapagliflozin and metformin is appropriate.
