Overview

Darbepoetin alfa and epoetin alfa are recombinant human erythropoietins, classified as erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs). Both drugs stimulate the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells by acting as agonists at the erythropoietin receptor. They are used primarily to treat anemia associated with chronic kidney disease, chemotherapy for certain cancers, and in some cases to reduce the need for blood transfusions during or after major surgery. Darbepoetin alfa is marketed under brand names such as Aranesp, while epoetin alfa is marketed as Procrit and Epogen. Both drugs are developed and manufactured by Amgen[1][3][4][5][6][8].
