Overview

Darunavir is a second-generation HIV protease inhibitor used in combination with other antiretroviral agents for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in adults and children. It works by selectively inhibiting the cleavage of HIV encoded Gag-Pol polyproteins, thereby preventing the formation of mature virus particles and halting viral replication. Darunavir is typically administered with a pharmacokinetic booster such as ritonavir or cobicistat to increase its effectiveness. It was developed to overcome resistance seen with earlier protease inhibitors and has demonstrated efficacy against both wild-type and resistant strains of HIV. The drug is marketed under brand names including Prezista, Prezcobix (a fixed-dose combination with cobicistat), and Rezolsta[1][2][3][5]. PF-03716539 appears to be a code name associated with Pfizer's development pipeline but there is no evidence it refers specifically to darunavir; rather, it may represent an investigational compound or formulation related to Pfizer.
