Overview
Darunavir + ritonavir is a combination of two antiretroviral drugs used in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Darunavir is a protease inhibitor that blocks the activity of Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 protease, an enzyme essential for viral replication and maturation. Ritonavir acts as a pharmacokinetic enhancer by inhibiting Cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4), thereby increasing plasma concentrations and effectiveness of darunavir. This combination is always used with other antiretroviral agents as part of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). The primary indication is for the management of HIV-1 infection in adults and children aged 3 years or older. While this regimen significantly reduces viral load and increases CD4 cell counts, it does not cure HIV/AIDS[1][5][8].
