Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Danavir R is a generic fixed-dose combination antiretroviral medication developed by Hetero and approved in India for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) infection in treatment-experienced adult and pediatric patients. It contains darunavir, a second-generation HIV-1 protease inhibitor, and ritonavir, which acts as a pharmacokinetic booster. Darunavir selectively inhibits the cleavage of HIV-1 encoded Gag-Pol polyproteins in infected cells, thereby preventing the formation of mature, infectious viral particles. Ritonavir, also a protease inhibitor, is used at a low dose to inhibit the cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme, which slows the metabolism of darunavir, leading to increased and sustained systemic exposure of darunavir. This combination helps reduce viral load, increase CD4+ T-cell counts, and lower the risk of HIV-related complications.
