Overview

This treatment protocol, developed by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), is designed for elderly patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). The regimen involves standard induction chemotherapy, typically the '7+3' regimen consisting of daunorubicin and cytarabine, followed by the infusion of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF)-mobilized peripheral blood stem cells (G-PBSC) from a haploidentical related donor. This approach, known as microtransplantation, aims to provide a temporary graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) effect. The donor cells are intended to attack the leukemia briefly before being rejected by the patient's immune system, thereby potentially improving remission rates without the severe toxicities and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) associated with full allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
