DC-CIK cells are an adoptive cellular immunotherapy consisting of a co-culture of dendritic cells (DCs) and cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells. CIK cells are a heterogeneous population of effector T cells, primarily CD3+CD56+ cells, generated by the ex vivo expansion of peripheral blood mononuclear cells in the presence of interferon-gamma, anti-CD3 monoclonal antibodies, and interleukin-2. Dendritic cells are professional antigen-presenting cells that, when co-cultured with CIK cells, enhance their tumor-specific cytotoxicity and proliferation by presenting tumor-associated antigens. At Fuda Cancer Hospital in Guangzhou, this therapy is being investigated for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma, often as an adjuvant treatment following cryosurgery or in combination with other cell types like γδ T cells, to eliminate residual tumor cells and prevent recurrence.
