DEB-TACE + PD-1 inhibitor is a combination therapy approach for treating hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), particularly in advanced or unresectable cases. This treatment combines drug-eluting beads transarterial chemoembolization (DEB-TACE), a locoregional therapy that delivers chemotherapy directly to the tumor while blocking its blood supply, with programmed death-1 (PD-1) inhibitors, which are immune checkpoint inhibitors that enhance T-cell responses against cancer cells. DEB-TACE works by loading multiple drugs onto beads that enable continuous drug delivery to tumor-feeding arteries while providing permanent embolization, maximizing drug efficacy and minimizing toxicity. The PD-1 inhibitors block the interaction between PD-1 on T cells and PD-L1 on tumor cells, preventing cancer cells from evading immune system detection. This combination therapy has shown promising results in improving progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and objective response rates (ORR) in patients with advanced HCC compared to monotherapy approaches.
