Overview

**DEBIRI** is a drug-device combination used for transarterial chemoembolization of liver tumors, principally colorectal cancer liver metastases. It consists of irinotecan loaded into sulfonate-modified polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel microspheres such as DC Bead or LC Bead. The beads embolize tumor-feeding hepatic arterial vessels while providing controlled, sustained local release of irinotecan into the targeted hepatic lesion. Irinotecan is converted to the active metabolite SN-38, which inhibits DNA topoisomerase I and promotes lethal DNA damage in proliferating tumor cells. DEBIRI has been evaluated clinically for liver metastases from colorectal cancer, including the smaller-bead DEBIRI-M1 approach.
