Overview

Decidual stromal cells (DSCs) are a unique population of mesenchymal-like cells isolated from the maternal decidua of the term placenta. They possess potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties, including the inhibition of T-cell proliferation and the secretion of various cytokines and growth factors. In clinical applications, DSCs are typically formulated in a solution containing human albumin to ensure cell stability and viability during infusion. This cell therapy is primarily investigated for the treatment of severe inflammatory conditions such as acute graft-versus-host disease (aGvHD) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), where they aim to dampen the cytokine storm and promote tissue repair. The development of this therapy has been led by researchers at the Karolinska Institutet.
