Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Dectova (zanamivir) is an intravenous antiviral medication developed by GSK for the treatment of complicated and potentially life-threatening influenza A or B virus infections. It is specifically indicated for use in adult and pediatric patients (6 months and older) when the infecting influenza virus is known or suspected to be resistant to other antivirals, or when other delivery routes (such as oral or inhalation) are not feasible or effective. As a neuraminidase inhibitor, zanamivir works by binding to the active site of the viral neuraminidase enzyme, preventing it from cleaving sialic acid residues on the host cell membrane. This action traps newly formed virions within the infected cell, thereby halting the spread of the virus throughout the respiratory tract. Dectova received marketing authorization from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in 2019.
