Overview

This is a combination of two small molecule drugs, deferoxamine mesylate and colchicine. Deferoxamine mesylate is an iron chelator used primarily to treat acute iron poisoning and chronic iron overload, such as in patients with thalassemia major or sickle cell disease who require frequent blood transfusions. It works by binding free iron in the body, forming a stable complex that can be excreted via urine, thereby reducing organ damage from excess iron[1][2][3]. Colchicine is an anti-inflammatory agent most commonly used for the prevention and treatment of gout flares. It acts by inhibiting microtubule polymerization through binding to tubulin, which disrupts neutrophil function and reduces inflammation[4]. There are no known approved fixed-dose combination products containing both deferoxamine mesylate and colchicine; this entry describes their combined use rather than a marketed co-formulation.
