Overview

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) + somatotropin is a combination therapy being evaluated by Cairo University for the treatment of subfertility, specifically in women with expected poor ovarian response undergoing intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Somatotropin, a recombinant human growth hormone, acts as an agonist at the growth hormone receptor (GHR), stimulating the production of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) within the ovarian microenvironment. This enhances the sensitivity of follicles to follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and may improve oocyte quality. DHEA is a steroid hormone precursor that is converted into androgens and estrogens, which are thought to increase the pool of recruitable preantral and antral follicles and improve the ovarian response to stimulation. This combination is typically administered as an adjuvant to standard controlled ovarian hyperstimulation protocols.
