Drug intelligence / Profile preview
DER 45 EV is a topical gel formulation of minocycline developed by Sol-Gel Technologies for the treatment of rosacea. The formulation utilizes Sol-Gel's proprietary silica-based microencapsulation technology, which is designed to stabilize the active ingredient and provide a controlled release to the skin, potentially enhancing efficacy while reducing systemic absorption and local irritation. Minocycline is a second-generation tetracycline antibiotic that exhibits both antimicrobial activity and potent anti-inflammatory properties, including the inhibition of neutrophil chemotaxis and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Sol-Gel conducted a Phase 2 dose-ranging study (NCT02211001) evaluating 1% and 5% concentrations of the gel in patients with papulopustular rosacea. Although the trial was completed in 2015, the company subsequently decided to discontinue the development of this specific formulation to prioritize other pipeline assets, such as Epsolay and Twyneo.
