Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Des(carbamimidoyl) zanamivir is a synthetic small molecule and an analog of zanamivir. It is structurally related to the neuraminidase inhibitor class of antivirals but lacks the carbamimidoyl (guanidino) group present in zanamivir. This compound has been studied primarily as a research tool and not as an approved therapeutic agent. Like zanamivir, it acts by inhibiting viral neuraminidase enzymes—key proteins that catalyze the removal of terminal sialic acid residues from viral and cellular glycoconjugates—thereby blocking the release of new influenza virus particles from infected cells[1][7][8]. Des(carbamimidoyl) zanamivir has been used in structural biology studies to understand neuraminidase binding but has not advanced into clinical development or approval for any indication.
