Overview

Desferrioxamine + silymarin is a combination therapy consisting of desferrioxamine (also known as deferoxamine), an iron-chelating agent, and silymarin, a flavonoid complex extracted from Silybum marianum (milk thistle) with antioxidant and hepatoprotective properties. Desferrioxamine binds free iron in the body to facilitate its excretion, thereby reducing iron overload commonly seen in patients requiring frequent blood transfusions such as those with beta-thalassemia. Silymarin acts primarily as an antioxidant and may provide additional protection against organ damage from iron overload by stabilizing cell membranes and scavenging free radicals. Clinical studies suggest that the combination is well tolerated and may be more effective than desferrioxamine alone in reducing serum ferritin levels in patients with transfusion-dependent thalassemia[1][3][5]. The combination has also been studied for its effects on organ-specific iron deposition.
