The combination of desflurane and normal saline is utilized as a control intervention in clinical research, specifically within the DEXDES Trial conducted by the Tam Anh Research Institute. Desflurane is a fluorinated methyl ethyl ether that serves as a general inhalation anesthetic for the maintenance of anesthesia during surgical procedures. It functions primarily by modulating the activity of GABA-A and glycine receptors, as well as inhibiting excitatory glutamate receptors. In the context of elective laparoscopic colectomy for colorectal neoplasms, desflurane is administered at 1 Minimum Alveolar Concentration (MAC) using EtControl mode. Normal saline (0.9% sodium chloride) is administered intravenously as an isotonic placebo control to match the volume and timing of dexmedetomidine infusion in the experimental arm, allowing for a double-blind assessment of hemodynamic stability and postoperative recovery.
