Overview

Desloratadine + montelukast is a fixed-dose combination of two small molecule drugs used primarily for the treatment of allergic rhinitis (including persistent and moderate-to-severe forms) and chronic urticaria. Desloratadine is a second-generation antihistamine that selectively antagonizes histamine H1 receptors, reducing symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, and itchy or watery eyes by blocking the action of histamine released during allergic reactions. Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that blocks cysteinyl leukotriene D4 (LTD4) at the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor type 1 (CysLT1), thereby reducing inflammation, swelling, and other allergy-related symptoms in the airways and nasal passages. The combination targets two key mediators in allergic processes—histamine and leukotrienes—providing broader symptom control than either agent alone. Clinical studies have shown this combination to be more effective than monotherapy with desloratadine for improving quality of life in patients with chronic urticaria or persistent allergic rhinitis[1][2][7]. The drug is available as an oral tablet formulation.
