Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Dexamethasone + honey is a combination therapy involving the synthetic corticosteroid dexamethasone and natural honey. Dexamethasone acts as a potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant agent by binding to glucocorticoid receptors, thereby inhibiting multiple inflammatory cytokines and mediators. Honey, known for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties, is used topically or orally as an adjunct in various medical settings. The combination has been studied for its synergistic effects in reducing postoperative complications (such as swelling, pain, and trismus) after oral surgery (notably impacted third molar removal), where it was found to be more effective than either agent alone[2][3]. Additionally, preclinical studies suggest that concurrent administration of honey with dexamethasone may mitigate glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis by preserving bone histomorphometric parameters[1]. This combination leverages the pharmacological actions of both agents—dexamethasone’s systemic anti-inflammatory effect and honey’s local tissue-protective properties.
