Dexamethasone + levetiracetam is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents commonly used in the management of patients with brain tumors, particularly glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), and perioperative seizure prophylaxis. Dexamethasone is a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid that exerts potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects by binding to the glucocorticoid receptor, thereby modulating gene expression to reduce inflammation, edema, and immune responses. Levetiracetam is an anticonvulsant that primarily acts by binding to synaptic vesicle glycoprotein 2A (SV2A) in the brain, modulating neurotransmitter release and stabilizing neuronal activity; it also inhibits voltage-dependent N-type calcium channels and antagonizes 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 3A. The combination is often used in neuro-oncology for symptomatic management—dexamethasone reduces peritumoral edema while levetiracetam prevents or controls seizures. Some studies suggest both drugs may have additional antineoplastic effects in glioblastoma cells[1][2].
