Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Dexamethasone + n-acetylcysteine is a combination therapy consisting of dexamethasone, a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid with potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties, and n-acetylcysteine (NAC), a glutathione precursor with antioxidant activity. This combination has been investigated for synergistic effects in various clinical settings where both inflammation and oxidative stress are implicated. Notably, it has been studied for the prevention of post-embolization syndrome (PES) and liver decompensation following transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) in hepatocellular carcinoma patients[1][3][4][7][8]. It has also been explored as an otoprotective strategy to prevent hair cell damage from oxidative stress or trauma in the inner ear[2][6], as well as for corneal wound healing[5]. The rationale behind this combination is that dexamethasone suppresses inflammatory responses while NAC mitigates oxidative damage by replenishing intracellular glutathione.
