Drug intelligence / Profile preview
dexamethasone + Ora-Sweet refers to an oral formulation of the synthetic glucocorticoid dexamethasone using Ora-Sweet as a flavoring and suspending vehicle. This specific combination was evaluated by the IWK Health Centre in a clinical trial (NCT02010008) to treat acute asthma exacerbations in children. The study aimed to determine if a high-concentration (10 mg/mL) dexamethasone solution mixed with Ora-Sweet, which allows for a smaller total liquid volume, would improve patient tolerability by reducing the incidence of vomiting compared to standard 1 mg/mL preparations. Dexamethasone provides therapeutic benefit in asthma through its potent anti-inflammatory effects, mediated by the activation of the glucocorticoid receptor and subsequent modulation of gene expression to decrease pro-inflammatory mediator production.
